Montessori is a philosophy and method of education which emphasizes the potential of the young child and develops this potential by utilizing specially trained teachers and special teaching materials. This is a program through which the child develops at his own pace, moving from one success to another.
Montessori recognizes in the child a natural curiosity and desire to learn; the Montessori materials awaken this desire and channel his curiosity into a learning experience which the child enjoys. Montessori materials help the child to understand what he learns by associating an abstract concept with a concrete sensorial experience. In this manner, the child is actually learning and not just memorizing.
Dr Maria Montessori, founder of the method, believed that no human being is educated by another person. She also believed that a truly educated individual continues learning long after the hours and years he spends in the classroom because he is motivated from within by a natural curiosity and love for knowledge. The Montessori method stresses that children learn and progress at their own pace so that fast learners are not held back, and slow learners are not frustrated by their inability to keep up.
Your child will experience freedom within a structured framework established by the teacher, with limits to provide security for the child and ensure progress in all areas of development. Discipline is established in a firm but loving way, always emphasizing the positive, by using consistency.
